The Preverbal Gun to Your Head Question.

Christians almost always use the same description to describe "true dedication" to Jesus. It goes something like, "If a dude had a gun to your head and asked if you were a Christian, would you say,"yes" and be shot?" This might take you back to an energetic passionate moment where the "preaching" comes to a crescendo, and then falls to a whisper with, "I hope you would say "yes"."

I do hope you would be able to say, "yes". I would want to say, "yes". Here's the disconnect. There are situations in the world where this question is important and telling. We need to encourage people in our churches that by following Jesus it may lead to the most dangerous places and you may, if you're lucky, be eaten by cannibals.

But not here in the states. There are Christians being abused for faith but it isn't at the point of a gun (yet). So I was thinking as this guy was talking (not the most polite thing I know, Sam, I'm sorry.) what if we ask a more relevant question?

What if a gun was pointed at your most serious of dreams? What if the gun was pointed at your boat or your Lexus or Civic (that's an easy choice for me)? What if the gun was pointed at your marriage, health, life of your daughter or son? What if the gun was pointed at sex and God's wisdom versus your way of thinking? What if the gun was pointed at getting your way, what you think you're worth in your company or some sort of justice? What if the gun was pointed at your money or your house? What if the gun was pointed at your hobbies, TV, golf, movies, DVD's, ATV's, motor homes, comforts, family memories or sleep?

This question makes much more sense to me. It grips me. It causes me to actually think about the answer.

"Oh, taste and see the Lord is good", the scriptures say so timely. Maybe our answer is most dependent on the lingering taste of the goodness of God in the mouth of our soul.

The gun is pointed...I dare you to say yes?
